The number of churches in the Philippines is growing rapidly and the most urgent need, therefore, is to train workers and pastors. In 1995 Pastor Simbran (the leader of the work) started to build a concrete structure to house the Ipil School of Ministry. With financial help from International Connections, the building was completed in 1999. The students both live and study in the building which is adjacent to the church and Pastor Simbran's house.
Life is tough in the Bible School because it is a preparation for the life of a pastor. The students do not have to pay any fees. A strong sense of humour is a must (but possessed by most Filipinos) as is a vibrant and strong faith. High scholastic achievement is not required; if it was there would be no students because schooling is basic except for those few who can afford a higher education.
The students meet for devotions four times a day and have five classes. They do all their own cooking, washing and cleaning. They all have jobs to do for the school, not to mention making time to study. In remaining moments they play basketball (the national sport) with wild enthusiasm. If all this sounds like hard work - it is - but they give themselves to everything with a happy enthusiasm. Their humility, simplicity and genuine love and affection are outstanding.
The programme lasts for four years but includes much practical involvement with crusades and conventions as well as study. From their second year, students are assigned to churches as student pastors.
